The five commands of Joint Base Cape Cod welcomed postmasters from the Mass. towns of Buzzards Bay, East Falmouth, East Sandwich, Forestdale, Mashpee and Sandwich on Sep. 5, 2019, for a ceremony to unveil two new stamps celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing. Joint Base Cape Cod was chosen as the location of the ceremony to recognize the contributions to the space program by the organizations and personnel assigned here.

The airfield at Otis Air National Guard Base served as an Abort Landing Site throughout NASA’s operation of the Space Shuttle – an alternative for the orbiter in the event of an emergency. For decades, the 6th Space Warning Squadron has tracked Low-Earth-Orbiting objects such as the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle as part of its mission. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard’s Air Station Cape Cod, as well as the Air National Guard’s 102nd Intelligence Wing have had several personnel selected to serve as NASA astronauts over the years.

JBCC leaders attending the ceremony included Brig. Gen. Christopher Faux, JBCC Executive Director; Col. Virginia Gaglio, 102nd Intelligence Wing commander; Capt. Scott Langum, commanding officer of Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod; Capt. Michael Hudson, commanding officer of Coast Guard Base Cape Cod; Lt. Col. (P) Matthew Porter, Camp Edwards Training Site commander and Lt. Col. James Roberts, 6th Space Warning Squadron commander. Attendees from the U.S. Postal Service included Michael Rakes, Greater Boston District Manager; John Fitzpatrick, Post Office Operations Manager; and postmasters Frank Miller, Janine Cox, Robert Maxim, Hillary Gaffney and Jonathan Graves.
