Pfc. Harvey Nichols Returns Home After 77 Years

Master Sgt. Marcus D. Patterson, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Mississippi National Guard’s Military Funeral Honors Detail, talks with family members after the ceremony for Army Pfc. Harvey Nichols Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019. Nichols, of Braxton, Mississippi, died in a Japanese prison camp in 1942 of malaria and malnutrition at the age of 27 after surviving the Japanese invasion of the islands in December 1941 and the Bataan Death March. Thanks to new DNA testing, his remains were identified amidst 14 others in an unmarked grave and returned home for burial after 77 years. There is an open invitation from the family for visitation and services for Pfc. Nichols. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 6, from 5-8 p.m. at Colonial Chapel of Mendenhall with services Saturday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Braxton.
