An audience member stands to be recognized for his prior military service, and fighting in the Battle of Tarawa before the start of the 2019 Summer Concert Series, featuring the Quantico Marine Corps Band, at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, Va., Aug. 29, 2019. Music plays a large part in military history, beginning with the establishment of the U.S. Marine Band in 1798. On Aug. 21, 1800, the Marine Band presented its first public concert in Washington, on a hill overlooking the Potomac.
