SAN DIEGO - Capt. Bradford Smith (left), commanding officer of Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) and Lt. Benjamin Box, NMCSD clinical chaplain, speak at the clinical pastoral education (CPE) residency program 2019 graduation ceremony at NMCSD’s chapel. This year’s ceremony recognized eight total graduates who will go on to assist active duty, veteran and dependent patients and their families during difficult times. The residency program equates to a year of graduate education for chaplains. The four Veterans Affairs graduates will minister to patients within the VA healthcare system. The four Navy chaplains are now qualified to serve at Navy hospitals, and are placed in assignments that require the skills and experience to provide intensive pastoral care and counseling in multi-disciplinary medical and clinical environments. Their commitment is to serve for three years after completing the program. (U.S. Navy Photo by Mass Communications Specialist 2nd Class Zach Kreitzer)
