Retired Air Force Master Sgt Charles Avery helps direct traffic during the Foothills Homeless Veteran Stand Down at the Hickory Legion Fairgrounds, in Hickory, N.C. Avery, a retired 145th Airlift Wing Security Forces first sergeant and Red Cross volunteer wanted to help fellow veterans. The first annual event was to help veterans within a 10-county region.
