Holocaust survivor Charlene Schiff, Secretary of the Navy Raymond E. Mabus, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta, Secretary of the Army John McHugh, and Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley light candles at the Department of Defense Holocaust Remembrance Day Observance April 19, 2012, at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. In 1941, the Nazis invaded Schiff's hometown of Horochow, Poland, and set up a ghetto. In 1942, with rumors that the ghetto was about to be destroyed, she and her mother fled into the forest. After several days of evading capture, young Schiff woke to find her mother was gone. Schiff spent the rest of the war living in the forest and is the only survivor from her family.
