Rising heat temperatures and tropical storm weather that is threatening Mississippi and Louisiana coastal communities didn’t stop a group of international students at the Naval Small Craft Instructions and Technical Training School from learning more about diesel engines in the Diesel Systems Overhaul and Maintenance (DSOM) course, July 10, 2019. DSOM is an eight-week course of instruction designed to provide personnel with the knowledge and skills to maintain and repair diesel engines and twin disc transmissions. Course topics include human rights, engineering fundamentals, internal combustion engine theory, pumps, diesel engine subsystems, diesel engine overhaul and reassembly, and diesel engine tune-up and break-in. Students will be presented with detailed instruction in the operating characteristics and subsystems (lubrication, cooling, air and fuel) of the Detroit 6V92TA diesel engine and will perform an engine overhaul, which includes a troubleshooting session after the engine has been rebuilt.
NAVSCIATTS is a Security Cooperation schoolhouse operating under United States Special Operations Command, "where the classroom meets the field," in support of Foreign Security Assistance and Geographic Combatant Commanders' Theater Security Cooperation priorities. NAVSCIATTS trains and educates foreign Special Operations Forces, SOF-like forces and SOF enablers across the tactical, operational and strategic spectrums through in-residence and Mobile Training Team Courses of Instruction; and serves as USSOCOM's premier Security Force Assistance training asset. More than 12,000 students from more than 120 Partner Nations have trained with this Naval Special Warfare command since 1963.
