STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss. —International officers attending the Naval Small Craft Instruction and Technical Training School’s Strategic Leaders International Course look on as Robert Gusentine, course director and lead instructor, presents the lesson, “Making Coffee.”

The 21 officers, representing Belize, Colombia, Ecuador, Grenada, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago, are attending semester 19-4’s four-week course of instruction titled the Western Hemisphere Initiative, which focuses on United States Southern Command’s theater security cooperation priorities.

“Making Coffee” focuses on the entire process that goes into the brewing of a single cup of coffee, from start to finish, highlighting the many aspects of personnel involved, agricultural issues, processing issues, logistical issues and any other issue that may arise in the brewing of that cup of coffee. The premise behind the lesson is to demonstrate to the officers attending the course how even seemingly simple challenges and issues do not occur in a vacuum. Issues, whether everyday life challenges or global security concerns, potentially affect us all.

SLIC is designed to advance and further develop their strategic thinking and planning skills. The senior level officers and civilian equivalents attending the course will receive training and materal requirements integral to the framework and problem solving methodologies necessary to adequately address the complexities of modern warfare in the maritime environment and at the strategic levels within their countries.

NAVSCIATTS is a Security Cooperation schoolhouse operating under U.S. Special Operations Command and Naval Special Warfare Could mmand in support of geographic combatant commanders’ and theater special operations commands’ priorities. To date, the international training command has trained more than 12,000 forces from 121 partner nations. (U.S. Navy photo by Angela Fry)
