Col. Frank Donovan, center, commander of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, tallies the number of Marines and sailors on their first MEU deployment as they make their way across the Atlantic Ocean, April 1, 2012. Donovan spent the day aboard the ship to better acquaint himself with the living conditions and morale of the Marines and sailors. The 24th MEU, partnered with the Navy's Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, is deploying to the European and Central Command theaters of operation to serve as a theater reserve and crisis response force capable of a variety of missions from full-scale combat operations to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
