    Air Cavalry Medal of Honor recipient visits 1st ACB troopers in Afghanistan

    Retired Col. Bruce Crandall (center), a Medal of Honor recipient, poses for a picture with Col. John Novalis, from Williamsport, Pa., (right) commander of the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, and Command Sgt. Maj. Glen Vela, the brigade’s senior enlisted adviser March 28. Crandall was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions as a UH-1 Huey pilot on the day of Nov. 14, 1965 in Vietnam. That day, he flew his helicopter into landing zone x-ray 22 times, withstanding enemy fire and a continuous threat from the north Vietnamese as he helped provide ground troops with needed supplies and medical evacuation capabilities.
