With the Irish Blackthorne wood stick traditionally carried by officers of the New York Army National Guard's 1st Battalion 69th Infantry, tucked under his arm, the commander of the battalion's Headquarters and Headquarters Company leads his soldiers up Fifth Avenue during the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade, March 17, 2012. The battalion, famous as the "Fighting 69th" of the Civil War, World War I and World War II service, has led the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade for more than 160 years.
