Legacy Airlift Squadrons return to Normandy 75 years

    86th Airlift Wing

Three C-130J Super Hercules, belonging to the 37th Airlift Squadron on Ramstein Air Base, fly in a four-ship formation with a C-17 Globemaster III trailing a mile behind over the Atlantic Ocean near Normandy, France, June 5, 2019. The 37th AS is a legacy squadron to the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, who on D-Day, June 6, 1944, accurately dropped hundreds of paratroopers onto the intended drop zone. The objective: to seize the city of Sainte-Mère-Église. The precision and accuracy carried out by the 37th TCS allowed the paratroopers to quickly take the city. Later, it would be discovered Sainte-Mère-Église was the first city liberated in France by Allied forces, in part because of the effort provided by the 37th TCS.
