Maj. F. Scott Newton pins a Purple Heart onto Cpl. Christian W. L. Carthen on Camp Hansen March 1. Carthen received the award after being hit with shrapnel from an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan June 28, 2011. After being wounded, he was back fighting the next week. Carthen is part of Military Police Support Company, III Marine Headquarters Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
