This Stokes mortar was unearthed and safely removed from a private residential property Nov. 14, 2016 during the pilot project assessing the potential for using Advanced Geophysical Classification technology at the Spring Valley Formerly Used Defense Site. The technology successfully identified this Stokes mortar while it was still buried as a potential explosive hazard that needed to be removed. This is the sort of potential explosive hazard crews are trying to identify and remove during munitions investigations at the Spring Valley FUDS.
