“My grandparents were here at Scott from about ‘58 to ‘61. Grandma worked as a secretary for a colonel, and my grandpa worked as a medic. My grandparents did all sorts of cool stuff. My grandfather helped deliver babies and flew on a couple of different airplanes. He’ll tell you a bunch of interesting stories.
My grandma was walking with some friends from the dorms to the base theatre, and my grandpa pulled up in his car. My grandma told me she was thinking, ‘Wow, look at that cool car.’ My grandpa rolled the windows down and asked, ‘Do you girls need a ride?’ And that’s how they met. They lived in Mascoutah for a little while, and that’s where they raised my mom until they separated from the Air Force in ’61 or so.
My grandma has visited a few times, and she was pointing out, ‘This is where we lived in Mascoutah, and here’s the chapel.’ The chapel was a big part of her life – she really took a lot of strength from her visits there. My grandpa also came to visit us, and the base, about a year ago now. He was showing me around and telling stories. We have pictures chronicling the history of Aeromedical Evacuation on our office walls, and he was telling me, ‘Oh, this is the airplane I flew on.’ He said everything’s changed a whole lot. It was really cool to learn more about both of them and our family history and to finally put an image to stories I had heard growing up. I’m super grateful that they were able to come back on different occasions and show my family and I how interconnected our Air Force stories really are.”
