A young Iraqi man has his iris scanned into the Biometric Automated Tool Set system (BATS) by a Soldier of Company B, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, inside the home of a local sheik of Al Awad, a village on the western outskirts of Baghdad, Aug. 10. The volunteers were processed into by Soldiers of Company B, before taking the oath of allegiance to the government of Iraq. The BATS system ensures the Iraqis enlisting in the volunteer force are not known criminals, extremists or insurgents by comparing their fingerprints and iris scans to databases of known enemies of coalition forces.
