Julius Shoulars, 94, a resident of the Westminster-Canterbury on the Bay in Virginia Beach, was interviewed for an oral history by staff members from the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. Shoulars entered service with the US Navy as a Coxswain shortly after the Japanese Attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He was assigned to a US Navy Beach Master Battalion that took part in the allied invasion of Normandy, France in June 1944; thereafter, he served aboard the Haskell-Class Attack Transport, USS Karnes (APA-175) in the Pacific. His service aboard the Karnes took him to Guam, Saipan, Tinian, and the Marshall Islands before the war ended. He returned to Norfolk after the war. (US Navy Photo by Max Lonzanida/Released).
