First Lt. Adrian Gutierrez, the executive officer of Military Police Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, shakes hands with and is congratulated by Lt. Col. Thomas B. Gutierrez received the 2011 Kallstrom Leadership Award for his actions while serving as a police advisor team leader to the Afghan National Civil Order Police in Sangin, Afghanistan, under Savage, who served as the battalion commander of 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. Throughout their seven-month deployment, Gutierrez was responsible for the mentorship of three ANCOP battalions and, through his leadership, aided Afghan commanders in the education and training of their troops. The Kallstrom awards, one for leadership and the other for bravery, are designed to recognize military police officers for their dedication to duty while serving in the Marine Corps on active duty.
