HAMBANTOTA, Sri Lanka (April 24, 2019) – U.S. Navy Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion FOUR(NMCB-4) stand with (center)Sri Lanka Navy Lt. Sankha Karunarahne, Commander of Hambantota District Civil Engineer, during a presentation and turnover April 24, 2019. NMCB-4, based in Port Hueneme, Calif., was designated to rehabilitate the school during the 2019 Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise.
Approximately 20 Seabees were scheduled to work with Sri Lanka Navy counterparts for about six weeks in the southern part of the country as part of an Engineering Civil Action Project (ENCAP). However, the exercise was paused on April 21 due to the Easter Sunday attacks in the capital city and other places in Sri Lanka. The school rehabilitation project will continue and is expected to be completed by Sri Lanka Navy engineers with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony slated for some time in June.
