Having been a fan of “Star Wars” for as long as he can remember, David Tischhauser, 823d Base Defense Squadron unit deployment manager, became a member of the 501st Legion in 2006, an all-volunteer organization that operates through contributions to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work.
“I was four when the first “Star Wars” came out,” Tischhauser said. “I remember getting the toys for Christmas, and that was amazing. Like all kids growing up in the 70s and 80s with “Star Wars”, I wanted to be a storm trooper. I love costumes and I love Star Wars, so getting those two passions together by being in the 501st, the reaction you get from kids and adults, which they get to hang out with one of their favorite characters that they’ve grown up loving.
“We do a lot of charity events, making visits to children’s hospitals,” Tischhauser added. “Those kids are going through a tough time, and you get to see them crack a smile, and you know it’s because of you, that you get to be a light in their life, even in a small way. Growing up poor, we didn’t have a lot of money, that now that I have something to give, I want to give it. Because it’s so rewarding the joy we bring to the fans, to see their eyes light up, who’ll run up to you and say, “I love you ‘Star Wars!’” To me, that makes it all worthwhile.” (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Erick Requadt)
