Sgt. 1st Class Robert Rodriguez, a platoon sergeant for the 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 36th Infantry Division of the Texas Army National Guard, stands near six boxes of approximately 500 sandals that were donated by the students of The Blessed Sacrament, November 2019 in Laredo, Texas. While home on emergency leave from his deployment in Djibouti, Rodriguez couldn’t stop thinking about the barefoot children that he saw while on patrol. On Veteran’s day, Rodriguez took the opportunity to speak to the children at his daughter’s school about the conditions in Djibouti and inspired them to start the sandal drive.
