Students from Davis Senior High School listen as Hunter Merritt (right), water resources planner for the Sacramento District, introduces himself as part of the moderator panel during the 2019 Agricultural Issues Forum at the Sacramento District headquarters, April 22, 2019. The forum is sponsored by the National FFA Organization and aims to teach students the skills of research, presentation, and debate as they relate to agricultural, conservation, and resource management topics. The students, all juniors, collaborated to give a 15-minute presentation and were then asked questions by the moderator panel.
“We’re building real-life skills in gathering information, presenting it, and working as a team throughout,” said Grace Lundgren (center), who plans to build a career in forestry and natural resource management.
The panel at the Sacramento District included Merritt and his fellow USACE Water Resources Planner David Sobel, USACE Biologist and Environmental Planner Bert Skillen, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Bay/Delta Team Agricultural Engineer Carolyn M. Jones.
"This has been an inspiring presentation, and it gives me great hope for the engineers, farmers, and voters of California's future,” said Merritt. “I hope this kind of civic engagement between agencies and schools continues, so that we may bridge the gap between young adults pondering their career plans and the workforce that needs them so badly, to enter with passion and vision and influence toward a better Earth."
