Pvt. Codi Hoffman, a heavy equipment engineer with the 617th Engineer Company, 864th Eng. Battalion, mans a .50-caliber machine gun Feb. 10 from a foxhole he and a few fellow soldiers built during a battalion-wide field training exercise on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., Feb. 3-13. Hoffman and the rest of the battalion found themselves focusing more than anything on infantry-style fighting and defense tactics - an approach the battalion hasn't taken to training in years owing to the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
