Shawn Stark, an optics technician with Headquarters Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, the “China Marines,” staples balloons to targets before live-fire training at Anderson Air Force Base, Guam, March 12, 2019. Stark, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, graduated from Blue Springs High School in May 2016 before enlisting in December the same year. Alpha Company Marines, the small boat raid specialists for BLT 1/4, the Ground Combat Element for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, conducted two weeks of unit-level training on Guam. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU partnering with the U.S. Navy's Amphibious Squadron 11, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
