The annual snow survey is underway! The district’s hydrological survey team began their 10-day, 4000-mile trek to measure the amount of water in snow covering the northern-most reaches of Minnesota, down the Red River, across central and southern Minnesota and finally western Wisconsin. Data collected on this survey will help the National Weather Service and U.S. Geological Survey generate forecast models for the potential of spring flooding, and provide valuable insight for the district managing six reservoirs in the Mississippi River headwaters and 13 locks and dams on the river in advance of navigation season.
