John Fromuth takes snow survey samples in Detroit Lakes in the Otter Tail River basin. he annual snow survey is nearing completion after the district’s hydrological survey team began their 10-day, 4000-mile trek to measure the amount of water in snow covering the northern-most reaches of Minnesota, down the Red River, across central and southern Minnesota and finally western Wisconsin. This data, gathered during late February and early March, helps generate forecast models for potential spring flooding and provide valuable insight for managing reservoirs throughout the district, including the Mississippi River headwaters and 13 locks and dams on the river.
