Spc. Lucas Sutton (right) oversees Pfc. Steven Springstead Jan. 23 as Springstead helps a Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., soldier prepare and file her 2011 taxes. Sutton, a former 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division infantryman whose 2009 deployment to Iraq and frequent morning runs with his squad almost completely wore down the cartilage in his left knee, now spends his days as a tax preparer at the JBLM Tax Center. Having spent the last 14 months assigned to the center due to his injuries, Slates now mentors fellow soldiers who were selected and trained to work at the center temporarily.
