The next generation of E-7s began their journey toward being thoroughly indoctrinated Chiefs March 1, 2019, with a kick-off aboard the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The first Coast Guard Chiefs were the former Station Keepers of Life Saving Stations. They were given the title Chief boatswains’ mate (CBM) with an (L) for “Lifesaving” attached to their rate to distinguish them from their seagoing counterparts.
