Sergeant 1st Class Kenneth McLean, an Army reservist, affixes second lieutenant rank to the uniform of his wife, newly promoted 2nd Lt. Erica McLean, also an Army reservist, at North Chapel on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., Jan. 13, during a direct commissioning ceremony for McLean, in which she traded in her staff sergeant stripes for officer rank. McLean applied for the straight-to-officer incentive, which requires soldiers to at least have bachelor's degrees in the fields they want to join as officers, in late September and was accepted just three months later.
