Spc. Scott M. Simpson, a Las Vegas native, receives the Purple Heart award from Brig. Gen. Jeffery Sinclair, the 82nd Airborne Division's deputy commander for support, during a ceremony at Forward Operating Base Spin Boldak, Afghanistan, Jan. 10. An infantryman with the 2nd Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, from Fort Hood, Texas, the 28-year-old received the award for injuries sustained during combat operations in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province July 16 when the vehicle he was in struck an improvised explosive device, killing a fellow soldier in the process.
