Staff Sgt. Thomas C. Stephenson, of Cross Plaines, Texas, receives the Purple Heart award from Brig. Gen. Jeffery Sinclair, the 82nd Airborne Division's deputy commander for support, during a ceremony at Forward Operating Base Spin Boldak, Afghanistan, Jan. 10. An infantryman with the 2nd Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, from Fort Hood, Texas, the 25-year-old received the award for injuries sustained during combat operations in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province Aug. 14 when the vehicle he was riding in struck an improvised explosive device.
