Cmdr. Garry Wright, High Speed Vessel - Southern Partnership Station 2012 (HSV-SPS 12) mission commander, gears up with the Guatemalan commander for paratroopers for the Marines, Col. Luis Francisco Juarez, before performing a parachutist exercise off a tower, during a tour of the General Felipe Cruz paratrooper base. Juarez is in charge of an elite group of Guatemalan military service members and is working with HSV-SPS for 10 days to build partnerships and camaraderie among U.S. service members and Guatemalan troops. HSV-SPS is an annual deployment of U.S. ships to the U.S. Southern Command's area of responsibility in the Caribbean, Central and South America. This mission involves sharing information between local host countries' navies, coast guards and civilian services throughout the region.
