Cmdr. Garry Wright, High Speed Vessel - Southern Partnership Station 2012 mission commander, sits next to the Guatemalan commander for paratroopers for the Marines Col. Luis Francisco Juarez, while viewing a parachutist demonstration during a tour of the Gen. Felipe Cruz paratrooper base. Col. Juarez is in charge of an elite group of Guatemalan military service members and is working with HSV-SPS for ten days to build partnerships and camaraderie among U.S. service members and Guatemalan troops. HSV-SPS is an annual deployment of U.S. ships to the U.S. Southern Command's area of responsibility in the Caribbean, Central and South America. This mission involves sharing information between local host countries navies, coast guards and civilian services throughout the region.
