U.S. Navy M1 Steel Helmet, 1945. Accession # HRNM 1993-209D-003. The U.S. military replaced World War One style helmets in 1941. The M1 helmet, which replaced the M1917A1 design, was the most successful combat helmet ever made, as it saw service into the 1980s, including World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The Navy version of the M1 helmet was painted battleship gray, dark blue or olive drab with a gray stripe. This particular helmet is on display at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.
