Cpl. Nathaniel Kelly, a machine gunner with Alpha Company, Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, adjusts a tripod attached to an M2 .50-caliber Browning machine gun during a defense of the amphibious task force gunnery exercise aboard the dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48), at sea, Jan. 20, 2019. During the training, Marines with BLT 1/4, Combat Logistics Battalion 31, and crewmen with the Ashland rehearsed ship security using a variety of dismounted and ship-mounted small-arms and heavy weapons. As a part of DATF, the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group and 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit team assumed a security posture to stimulate traveling through potentially dangerous waters. BLT 1/4 is the Ground Combat Element and CLB-31 is the Logistics Combat Element, both with the 31st MEU. The 31st MEU, The Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU partnering with the Wasp ARG, provides a flexible and lethal force ready to perform a wide range of military operations as the premier crisis response force in the Indo-Pacific region.
