Soldiers deployed to Poland celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. day observance

Sgt. 1st Class Shaun Ellis, the equal opportunity representative for the Mission Command Element, speaks to a group of Soldiers with the 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Riley, Kansas, about Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and accomplishments during a community breakfast in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day observance in Poznan, Poland, Jan. 18.

The equal opportunity representative focuses on equal opportunity among the Soldiers and diversity management to ensure service members are trained and protected from any form of discrimination.

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most important voices of the American civil rights movement. His speeches sparked change in eliminating segregation and obtaining equal rights.

Most notably, in MLK’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech, he says “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

This day is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community." (U.S. Army photo by: Spc. Christina Westover)
