U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Nathan Reitan, of the 119th Wing, and Joann Splonskowski, North Dakota National Guard civilian employee, visit with Alfred Steiger at the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, N.D., Dec. 11, 2018. They are among a group of Airmen and Soldiers visiting the veterans at the home to share a holiday meal and present the gifts to the veterans living at the home, which is an annual event for the North Dakota National Guard. Steiger is making paper poppies to sell as fund raisers for the American Legion Auxiliary of North Dakota. He makes 80,000 of the poppies each year by himself! The gifts for the veterans were purchased using donations and are given by North Dakota National Guard members to the residents at the Veterans Home to demonstrate their appreciation to the veterans who have served before them.
