Sailors Train Honduran Doctors, Nurses for a Young Patient’s Successful Recovery

181213-N-BN355-1053 TRUJILLO, Honduras (Dec. 13, 2018) - Lt. Melissa Mathers (left) and Lt. j.g. Karen Jimenez Gudino (center- left), nurses assigned to the hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20), explain the cleaning procedures for a Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) line on a young patient to local Honduran nurses during a subject matter expert exchange (SMEE). The SMEE was conducted between U.S. Navy medical officers and Honduran doctors at a local hospital. Comfort is on an 11-week medical support mission to Central and South America as part of U.S. Southern Command’s Enduring Promise initiative. Working with health and government partners in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Honduras, the embarked medical team will provide care on board and at land-based medical sites, helping to relieve pressure on national medical systems caused partly by an increase in cross-border migrants. The deployment reflects the United States’ enduring promise of friendship, partnership and solidarity with the Americas.
