Jacob McVay, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District physical scientist, practices using ArcGIS during a training session held at Baltimore District's Headquarters, June 14, 2018. ArcGIS Pro will eventually replace ArcMap, which is currently the primary software used for performing geographic information systems (GIS) analysis. This is the first major change to Esri's primary GIS software platform in more than 15 years. GIS are computer systems that manage, model, analyze and display geographic information and data through live web maps and more. GIS are used for a variety of initiatives, such as mapping stormwater infrastructure and runoff into the Chesapeake Bay; delineating floodplains and wetlands; and displaying projects that fall within various mission-area boundaries. There were approximately 30 Baltimore District team members in attendance during two training sessions. The focus was to train employees on tools in ArcGIS Pro that were not available in ArcMap or have been significantly improved. Jared Scott, Baltimore District eGIS Program manager, led team members through a real-world, hands-on GIS exercise with the goals of them learning the new interface, and being able to perform tasks like georeferencing, geoprocessing, editing, and 3D and chart creation.
