U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Maj. Gen. Luke Reiner, Wyoming adjutant general, chat during a Nov. 14, 2018 visit at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne where two of three Bells of Balangiga are displayed. The bells were taken as a war trophy by U.S. troops after 48 American soldiers were massacred in 1901 during the U.S. occupation of the Phillipines. The bells were used to signal the start of the attack. The ceremony in Wyoming signaled the start of an effort to return the bells to the Philippines.
