The oldest Marine present passes a slice of cake to the youngest Marine present at during the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Combat Logistics Battalion 31 243rd Marine Corps Birthday ceremony at the Veteran’s memorial park on Tinian, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Nov. 10, 2018. All the Marines taking part in the relief efforts here in the wake of Super Typhoon Yutu missed the traditional Marine Corps Birthday Ball in Okinawa, Japan, where both the 31st MEU and CLB-31 are garrisoned – improvising as Marines often do, the Marines and Sailors here pitched-in to coordinate a short ceremony which included a guest speaker, remarks from the commanding officer, a cake-cutting and gourmet dinner of hamburgers, hotdogs and a slice of cake. Marines and Sailors with the 31st MEU and CLB-31 are assisting local and civil authorities on Tinian to deliver aid for families affected by Super Typhoon Yutu, which struck here Oct. 25 as the second strongest storm to ever hit U.S. soil. Marines and Sailors with the 31st MEU and CLB-31 arrived on Tinian Oct. 29-31 to lead relief efforts on Tinian in response to Yutu as part of Task Force-West. TF-W is leading the Department of Defense’s efforts to assist CNMI’s local and civil authorities provide critical assistance for citizens devastated by Yutu. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations across the Indo-Pacific region.
