Navy Innovators Reveal Revolutionary Research to Counter Emerging Threats

KING GEORGE, Va. (Sept. 25, 2018) – Principal investigator Dr. Michael Lowry briefs a visitor at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) In-house Laboratory Independent Research (ILIR) and Independent Applied Research (IAR) End of Year Review at the University of Mary Washington Dahlgren Campus. Lowry -- an NSWCDD chemist who researches the interaction between matter and radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum -- explained his ILIR project, “Modulating Electronic Properties of Two Dimensional Macromolecular Structures Through Additives and Post-Synthetic Modification” to Navy technical managers, engineers, and scientists as well as representatives from academia, industry, transition partners, and other key stakeholders. Funded by the Office of Naval Research, the ILIR and IAR program fosters fundamental and applied research at the Navy Warfare Centers to counter emerging threats by connecting technological needs with current and emerging capabilities.
