Toledo Zoo herpetologist Peter Tolson, Ph.D., director of conservation and research examines the mouth of Pinky, a male Cuban boa at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station veterinary treatment facility, Oct. 13. Soldiers assigned to South Atlantic Veterinarian District Command Detachment help Tolson replace the transmitters before the battery expires and check the reproductive condition of the snake as well as document general health of each individual. The work is part of a study to better understand the threatened species. JTF Guantanamo provides safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released by a court. The JTF conducts intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination for the protection of detainees and personnel working in JTF Guantanamo facilities and in support of the War on Terror. JTF Guantanamo provides support to the Office of Military Commissions, to law enforcement and to war crimes investigations. The JTF conducts planning for and, on order, responds to Caribbean mass migration operations.
