Army Capt. Carla Vega, a veterinarian assigned to South Atlantic Veterinarian District Command Detachment at Naval Station Guantanamo, stitches up Daisy, a female Cuban boa, after having a radio transmitter implanted under her ribs at the veterinary clinic, Oct. 13. Soldiers assigned to the detachment help Peter Tolson, Ph.D., a herpetologist from the Toledo Zoo, replace the transmitters before the battery expires and check the reproductive condition of each snake as well as document general health of the individuals. The work is part of a study to better understand the threatened species. JTF Guantanamo provides safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released by a court. The JTF conducts intelligence collection, analysis and dissemination for the protection of detainees and personnel working in JTF Guantanamo facilities and in support of the War on Terror. JTF Guantanamo provides support to the Office of Military Commissions, to law enforcement and to war crimes investigations. The JTF conducts planning for and, on order, responds to Caribbean mass migration operations.
