Early in the deployment, the Marines of the logistics element of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force- Southern Command built a new gateway into the compound, dubbing it Camp Manion after 1st Lt. Travis Manion, a Marine officer that paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting his Marines in Al Anbar Province, Iraq in 2007. The SPMAGTF deploys here to assist Central and South American counties with a gamut of issues including natural disaster, civil engineering, and security cooperations.
