Col. Steven Gandia prepares to hand the flag back to his Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Carr. Northeast Medical Area Readiness Support Group holds a change of command, Sept. 16, 2018, at a ceremony at Fort Wadsworth Battery Weed on Staten Island, New York.
The Change of Command ceremony symbolizes the continuation of leadership and unit identity despite the change of individual authority. It also represents the transfer of power from one leader to another; passing the ceremonial flag from outgoing to incoming commander is a physical representation of that transfer.
