SAN DIEGO (Sept. 14, 2018) Chief Cryptologic Technician (Technical) Royce Carpenter, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), salutes the sideboys during a chief pinning ceremony at the Naval Base San Diego chapel. Eight Sailors were promoted to chief petty officer during the ceremony. Makin Island, homeported in San Diego, is conducting a depot-level maintenance availability.
