French airborne marines stand on line during a close quarters combat drill at the Kaneohe Bay Range Training Facility here Oct. 4. “The important thing about these drills are the fundamentals,” Cpl. Timothy Truitt, rifleman, 2/3, said. “Safety is paramount while getting the communication and procedures right while firing.” During the drill, the French were using a cartridge that didn’t fit the grooves inside the rifle’s barrel. So when the bullet exited the barrel, the bullet would round and create a tear-shaped entrance hole that took chunks out of the target.
