MIAMI -- U.S. Navy Adm. Kurt Tidd, commander of U.S. Southern Command, escorts Ecuador Minister of Defense Oswaldo Jarrin to the command’s headquarters shortly after the minister’s arrival Sept. 4. Jarrin visited SOUTHCOM to learn about the command’s mission and discuss potential opportunities for stronger U.S.-Ecuador security cooperation. This fall, Ecuador and the United States will partner to support humanitarian assistance during the deployment of the hospital ship USNS Comfort. The ship will deploy to Ecuador, Colombia, Honduras and Peru, where embarked U.S. military and civilian medical personnel will work alongside local partners to assist citizens based on needs identified by each host nation. In 2016, the SOUTHCOM supported international relief efforts led by the government of Ecuador to aid victims of a 7.8-magnitude earthquake. (U.S. Southern Command photo by Juan Chiari)
