U.S. Air Force Gen. Terrence J. O'Shaughnessy, commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) congratulates airmen of the 142nd Fighter Wing at Portland Air National Guard Base, Ore., Aug. 23, 2018, for their quick reaction and professionalism during a recently stolen aircraft intercept in the vicinity of McCord Air Force Base, Wash., Aug. 14, 2018.

Federal Aviation Administration reported a stolen Bombardier Q400 aircraft from Horizon Airlines from Seattle-Tacoma airport and requested DoD assistance. North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) launched 2 F-15C alert aircraft from Portland, who proceeded to intercept the Q400 in the vicinity of McCord AFB. The fighters were directed to fly supersonic to expedite the intercept.

The stolen aircraft initially tracked south from Seattle-Tacoma. NORAD fighters were working to redirect the aircraft out over the Pacific Ocean when it crashed on the Southern tip of Ketron Island in the Southern end of Puget Sound. NORAD fighters did not fire upon the aircraft. The event was subsequently passed to local rescue and law enforcement.

“As recent events have clearly shown, it’s vitally important we maintain forces on alert one hundred percent of the time, so we can respond, no matter what happens. We have a saying in NORAD that ‘we have the watch,’ and the 142nd Fighter Wing clearly embodies that,” said O'Shaughnessy.

Western Air Defense Sector (WADS) operations crew from Joint Base Lewis-McChord provided command and control of the 142nd Fighter Wing's F-15 intercept of the stolen aircraft.

The maintainers and crew chiefs of the 142nd Fighter Wing who were on alert the day of the intercept received coins and were publicly thanked by O'Shaughnessy for their professionalism, dedication and readiness which led to a safe outcome for the citizens here.
